Our journey began at Otawara Christian Church, when Pastor Ohashi was approached by Toni O’Connor, a Jamaican assistant language teacher in Nasushiobara. She asked if it would be possible to start an English worship service, since there were already attendees from America, Nigeria, and Jamaica taking part in the Japanese service. Pastor Ohashi said yes and decided to hold a “trial” English service one Sunday morning. The turnout was overwhelming. Many local residents had been looking for a place to worship in English, and the response was so strong that the service quickly became a weekly gathering to serve the growing number of foreign residents in and around Nasushiobara and Otawara. One long-time member, Kevin Blackburn, encouraged the church to believe for more of God’s leading for the English worship service when he preached from Jeremiah 29. This message became a founding truth, reminding us that even in an unfamiliar land like Japan, God calls His people to serve, seek peace, and flourish. With the support of long-time Nasushiobara resident Pastor Timo and other dedicated believers, the church opened its doors to a vibrant international family from nations such as the Philippines, Myanmar, and many countries across Africa. Over the years, this diverse group has grown into a flourishing global community and eventually led Pastor Ohashi to establish a dedicated sanctuary where people from every nation can gather and praise the Lord together.
